2001
Columbia Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2001 growing season was ideal! There were no rains, no early frosts, or late cloudy weather to contend with. If every year could be like 2001 we would write “perfect” and stop writing vintage reports. Joe thinks 2001 was the best vintage since he has been in Washington.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon has an unbelievable presence of black fruit with a perfect tannic and acidic backbone. The wine is designed to be approachable early and to retain its youthful charter for 10 to 15 years.

The 2001 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. The fruit was sourced from Alder Ridge, DuBrul, Phinny Hill, and Tapteil vineyards. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 19 months. The alcohol by volume is 14.8%, pH is 3.65, and titratable acidity is 0 .6g/ml. It was bottled May 30, 2003.

91 Wine & Spirits A pure, clean bolt of Cabernet. This wine has an inky intensity that offers pure aromas of evergreen, cassis and chocolate. That purity informs the palate as well, with dense, deep black currant fruit. It’s all texture with zinc-like minerality that gives the wine a low center of gravity, providing energy and length. (October 2004)

90 Wine Spectator Ripe, round and generous with its smoky blackberry, cherry and dark plum flavors, which mingle harmoniously with a refined touch of spicy oak on the long, focused finish. Drink now through 2010. --HS (9/30/2004)

Paul Gregett/Wine Adviser Ripe and firm, this excellent blend of Yakima, Columbia Valley and Red Mountain fruit shows a nice touch; not too heavy but consistent and supple. Tasted right after the Georges de Latour it held its own, with a clean, polished presentation of cherry and cassis, a lingering middle and a smooth, slightly oaky finish. (10/20/2004)

Outstanding! Wine Press NW This Cab’s up-front oak mingles with hints of molasses and plenty of black fruit aromas, while smooth, delightful blackberry flavors meld with milk chocolate. A well-balanced wine with explosive flavors and an impressive finish. (Winter 2004/2005)
